Aitken ThirtySix sits quietly on Aitken Street in Gisborne, offering a straightforward but well-crafted café experience where coffee takes center stage. Locals and visitors alike come here for reliably strong brews made from Pillar Coffee beans—expect rich, smooth flavors whether you’re after a black coffee, a creamy white, or a gently brewed pour over. For tea drinkers, the selection from Tea Pigs adds a calm alternative with classics like English Breakfast and Earl Grey.

The café keeps things simple on the food front, focusing mostly on a small but thoughtfully curated menu of toasties and pastries that complement the coffee without stealing the spotlight. Freshly made and easy to share, these light bites fit well with the easygoing atmosphere.

Inside, the vibe is relaxed and unhurried—clean lines, subtle lighting, and friendly baristas make it an inviting spot to pause. While the space isn’t large, it manages to feel uncluttered and peaceful, attracting a mix of people: those catching up with friends, locals dropping in for their daily pick-me-up, and remote workers carving out quiet corners to get some focus.

Many find that the best time to visit is mid-morning or early afternoon, when the café hums quietly without the rush of peak hours. Sitting in, you might notice how the staff handle the pace with ease—though the occasional wait for coffee signals they are paying close attention to each order. The takeaway cups for in-house drinks are a minor quirk, but one that doesn’t detract from the overall experience.

If you’re after a spot in Gisborne where the coffee is carefully prepared and the atmosphere invites lingering, Aitken ThirtySix fits the bill. Its charm lies in its straightforward approach and the unpretentious feeling of a neighbourhood café that takes its craft seriously.

Had to wait a while for coffee, food came out first. Eating in, coffee came out in take away cups.

A peaceful atmosphere, amazing coffee (after our experience in small towns that have previously said food coffee...this one delivers!). Small range of toasties and pastries that were all really good.

Absolutely love this place! The coffee is consistently amazing—rich, smooth, and clearly made with care. The staff are always friendly and welcoming, and the cozy vibe makes it the perfect spot to relax, catch up with a friend, or get some work done. You can tell they really care about quality and community. It’s become my go-to coffee spot, and I’m so glad to have it in the neighbourhood!

Overall Rating: 5 Aitken ThirtySix is a small cafe with some baked goods as optional accompaniments to the most amazing coffee you've ever had. The baristas are quick and friendly, the vibe is clean and chill. We had a couple of their Iced Mont Blancs. You will come here. And you will enjoy it. Pros: - Very well priced. - Fast. - Relaxing. - Had a nice chat with the baristas. - Literally the Mont Blanc iced coffee is one of the most delicious things I've ever had, the coffee was perfectly roasted and brewed, it was perfectly priced and it was infused with some fresh orange. Cons: - It closes at 2pm, it should be open 24/7. In conclusion. It's peak. We literally got the coffee, left, drank it, came back and ordered two more. I don't know what else to say. Just go here, get the coffee, enjoy your life.

You HAVE to check out Aitken ThirtySix. Their coffee is next level. It's rich and flavorful without any of that bitter flavour and it goes down so smooth. If coffee isn't your thing, grab a rich hot chocolate instead. The staff who work there are awesome – super friendly and always up for a chat. It's not just grabbing a coffee; it's like a little treat every time. Check out their toasties as well for a great breakfast or snack on the go. Skip the usual and head to Aitken ThirtySix. You won't regret it! Five stars all the way!

Best coffee in town!! Baristas never burn soy milk here. They also just started offering a specialty Matcha drink which is honestly the best quality I've had outside of Japan Beats Melbourne cafes any day. Cheers guys~

This little cafe is absolutely incredible and although not even remotely close to me and stumbled across entirely by accident while roadtripping I will 100% be back. The coffee was Devine and the baked goods were outstanding! The best cinnamon scroll I have ever eaten and the pistachio cruffin was magnificent. If I had of known how delicious they were going to be I would have taken photos for the review- next time I will be prepared to show them off :)
